54mm Fire Doors
54mm fire doors are built for an FD60 rating, and we stock them from Deanta, LPD and Premdor in oak or white primer, along with glazed office designs and an unfinished hardwood blank. They're usually bought for openings where the schedule asks for a full hour of protection. Because the leaf is 10mm thicker than an FD30 door, it needs its own frame, seals and hinges, so check your opening can take one before anything else.

When to specify 54mm fire doors
Thickness is a large part of what lets a door hold back fire for longer. An FD30 leaf is usually 44mm, while 54mm is the standard FD60 door thickness, and that extra depth gives the core more to char through before fire reaches the other side.
Expect to find 54mm fire doors on stairwells in taller buildings and along commercial corridors, or guarding a plant room, wherever the fire strategy asks for 60 minutes. That call belongs to your building control officer or fire risk assessor, not the door supplier. Most 54mm fire doors are ordered by trade buyers and property managers working from a door schedule, though the odd homeowner needs one because building control has asked for it.
54mm fire doors only earn their keep when the rest of the opening matches them. A 54mm leaf in a frame, wall or overpanel rated for 30 minutes still gives you 30 minutes, so every part around the door has to be rated for an hour as well.
If you’d rather shop by rating, the same doors sit in our FD60 fire doors category.
Our 54mm fire doors: oak, white and glazed
Our 54mm internal fire doors come from three makers.
- Deanta: Seville, with traditional panels, and Ely, with vertical grooves, each available in pre-finished oak or white primed. Both have a solid core and FSC-certified timber, and they come in the widest choice of sizes, including metric 2040mm heights up to 926mm wide.
- LPD: Belize oak, unfinished or pre-finished, the Vancouver ladder in pre-finished oak or white primed, and the white primed Mexicano, all in 1981 x 762mm or 838mm. LPD also makes an unfinished hardwood blank for joiners who want a plain flush leaf.
- Premdor: glazed office styles, namely the Plywood 1 Long Light with white trim and the White Primed 1L with a clear side light.
Choose a pre-finished 54mm oak fire door from Deanta or LPD and it can go straight on its hinges. Unfinished Belize is the better pick when the new oak has to be oiled or lacquered to sit alongside existing woodwork.
A 54mm white fire door is delivered in primer only, and whoever paints it should mask the seals and the certification label first.
Where people need to see through the door, a 54mm glazed fire door from Premdor arrives with the glass already in. That glass was part of the fire test, so cutting it or adding a panel on site takes the door outside its certification.
There are no pairs at this thickness, and some glazed sizes sell out between deliveries, so check that your size shows as available. All of the 54mm fire doors listed here carry a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty. If you’re fitting out a whole block, a trade account is worth setting up first.
Frames and hinges for 54mm fire doors
A heavier leaf asks more of everything it hangs from. Before you order, work through the parts below, because a 44mm frame and its fittings won’t simply carry over.
| Part | What to check for a 54mm leaf | Why it matters |
| Frame or lining | Rated for 60 minutes, with stops or a rebate set for 54mm | An FD30 frame, even re-stopped, wasn’t tested with an FD60 door |
| Intumescent seals | The strip size given in the door’s fitting instructions | FD60 seal sizes differ from FD30, so the old strip can’t be reused |
| Hinges | Number, size and grade from the fitting instructions | The extra weight sits on the hinges every time the door swings |
| Closer | Matched to how heavy and wide the leaf is | Too weak and the door won’t latch; too strong and it’s hard to open |
| Locks and latches | Suitable for 60-minute use | One unrated latch can undo the whole doorset |
The 54mm fire door frame needs a deeper frame rebate, or stops set further out, than a 44mm opening. Our LPD FD60 linings come in hardwood and oak, in 108mm and 133mm widths, so you can match the wall thickness. You’ll find them in our frames and moulding range.
When buying 54mm fire door hinges, go by the hinge count in that door’s fitting instructions, not habit, and make sure every one is fire-rated. Three is the floor on any fire door, and a leaf of this weight may call for a fourth.
How far 54mm fire doors can be trimmed varies by maker, and the allowance is always small, so measure up before you pick a size. If you do need to take some off, run a knife along the line first to stop the veneer tearing, and aim for a gap of about 3mm at the sides and head.
Tell us which door you’ve chosen and we’ll match the lining, seals and hinges to it.
Moving up from 44mm to 54mm
Upgrading an FD30 opening to take 54mm fire doors is rarely a straight swap. The existing frame was made and tested for a thinner leaf, its seals are sized for 30 minutes, and the closer was chosen for a lighter door.
When pricing 54mm fire doors for an upgrade, budget for the whole opening rather than the leaf alone. In most cases all three get replaced, along with the hinges and the door itself, and the wall needs checking for a 60-minute rating. Keep the doors lying flat somewhere dry until fitting day, and have two people on hand to hang each one.
If your schedule only needs 30 minutes, our 44mm fire doors are lighter and come in far more styles.
54mm fire doors: your questions answered (FAQ)
Is every 54mm door FD60?
Every 54mm fire door in this category is named and sold as FD60. Check the rating on the product page before you order, as the door’s own listing is the one to rely on.
What frame and hinges does a 54mm door need?
A frame or lining rated for 60 minutes with stops set for the thicker leaf, the intumescent strip size in the fitting instructions, and fire-rated hinges in the number those instructions give.
Can I hang a 54mm FD60 fire door in my existing frame?
Not unless that frame is already rated for 60 minutes and set up for a 54mm leaf. Most existing frames were built for 35mm or 44mm doors, so plan to replace the frame as well.
Do you sell 54mm fire doors in pairs?
No, they’re single leaves only, up to 926mm wide.
Can I paint or stain 54mm fire doors?
Yes. The white primed doors are made to be painted, and unfinished oak and the hardwood blank can be oiled, lacquered or painted. Seal all six faces once any trimming is done, and keep paint off the intumescent strips and smoke seals.
Do 54mm fire doors need a self-closer?
Yes, wherever the door schedule or your fire risk assessment calls for one, which is common on escape routes and in shared buildings. Pick one strong enough for the weight of the leaf.
Are 54mm fire doors much heavier than 44mm?
Yes, noticeably. The extra thickness adds real weight, which is why the hinges, closer and frame need checking and why two people should handle each door.
